Old Ponale Road

Riva del Garda, Italy
The old Ponale road, connecting Riva del Garda to the Valle di Ledro, used strategically during World War I is now an Alpine path for hikers and cyclists.
The road was realized 150 years ago by entrepreneur Giacomo Cis and was closed at the end of the ‘80s, when a new tunnel connecting the town to the Valle di Ledro was built. It was definitively closed to traffic in 1999, date of the last landslide. The route was then restored and given new life thanks also to the Province Restoration Service which turned the tarmac road into a nature path, while the Road Service restored and refurbished a number of works of First World War time, positioning them back on the path.
